Many of us live in Southwest Florida because of the climate, the water and the wide access to natural areas. Our quality of life and economy depend on a healthy and vibrant environment.

Lately, the headlines have been dominated by disturbing news. Red tide has been responsible for closing local beaches and causing possible health issues. Blue-green algae invades area waterways creating fish kills. Lake Okeechobee releasing polluted water with agricultural runoff.

So, FOX 4 is launching a special project to focus on these and other environmental issues, with a goals of helping to bring awareness to the crisis and search for solutions.

We are calling this project Protecting Paradise.

You will see multiple stories per week on all of our broadcast and digital platforms. We'll be sharing stories on our social media pages, and updating special sections in our app and on our website: Fox4now.com/protectingparadise

Reports will shed light on immediate issues like the recent red ride outbreak and the algae crisis, as well as long-term challenges like growth and development that may negatively impact Southwest Florida’s natural areas, wildlife and waterways.

And we want to hear from you. Tell us about an environmental problem that is impacting your lifestyle, business or health. We also want to hear positive stories about people or groups making an impact in your area.

Together we can make a difference to protect our paradise.
