**UPDATE** -- The Lee Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday agreed to purchase a 9.57-acre parcel on Mound Key for conservation.

This was the last privately-owned parcel on the island.

The land also includes a dock and has been used in recent years to pasture goats, which would be removed prior to the purchase closing.

LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- County commissioners will vote on whether to buy more land in Estero Bay for the Conservation 20/20 program.

They will look at approving $860,000 to buy 9.6 acres of property on Mound Key.

It's a privately owned section of the island right next to Mound Key Archeological State Park in Estero Bay.

According to the proposal, buying the land could lead to an expansion of the state park.

Mound Key is believed to have been the ceremonial center of the Calusa Indians when the Spaniards first attempted to colonize Southwest Florida in the early 1500s.

The shell mounds and ridges of Mound Key rise more than 30 feet above the waters of Estero Bay.
