LEE COUNTY, Fla.- Several puppies are recovering at the Gulf Coast Humane Society after being rescued from a suspected hoarding house in Hendry County last week. The owner was charged with animal cruelty.

This latest case sheds a light on what officials call a big problem with puppy mills in Southwest Florida.

Jennie Curtis, shelter manager at the Gulf Coast Humane Society, said they've taken in hundreds of dogs in just the past couple of years that were living in in-humane conditions. "They are petrified. They are trembling, they shake almost right out of their fur, they quiver when you go to reach for them," Curtis said.

Curtis said many of these puppy mills are still operating under the radar so if you have suspicions, speak up.  "It's everywhere it could be in a backyard of your neighbor it could be anywhere and it happens so frequently," Curtis said.
