Rash of car burglaries in Bonita neighborhood

Posted

A rash of car burglaries has some residents of a Bonita Springs neighborhood making sure their doors are locked. Wednesday morning, the Lee County Sheriff's Office responded to 4 separate incidents in the Spanish Gardens neighborhood, which is just north of Terry Street near Imperial Parkway.

According to incident reports, all of the cars that were burglarized were left unlocked. Stephen Jackson lives on Croise Drive, next door to the owners of one of the burglarized vehicles. He said his neighbors told him nothing of great value was stolen.

"It was just money and pocket change, more or less, that was in the vehicle that they got away with," Jackson said.

But whoever burglarized a car on nearby Coimbra Lane got away with the driver's wallet, containing his ID and 3 credit cards, according to an incident report. Fortunately the driver was able to cancel all of the credit cards before any illegal purchases were made.

According to one of the reports, a witness described seeing a man walking the neighborhood the day before the burglaries were reported, who seemed to be "mapping out the area." The witness described the man as "an older Hispanic male wearing all black and a backpack," around 2 p.m. on Monday.

The burglaries have Jackson taking no chances with his pickup truck.

"Any vehicle that was locked didn't seem to have been touched," he said, nothing that there was a good chance the suspect(s) may have checked out his truck.

"It was locked," he said.
