Rash of car burglaries rock Bonita Springs

Nearly a dozen car burglaries in one Bonita Springs neighborhood seem to have a common theme.

"I always lock the car doors ,but I remember last night, I didn't lock it," said DeeDee Wellborn.

That decision didn't cost her much, the thieves only made off with some spare change.  But nearby resident Andrew Principe wasn't so lucky.

"I left my wallet in there, I left my doors unlocked so, that was my fault, they got some cash from me," said Principe.

He lives along Bailes Drive in Bonita Springs near the Collier-Lee County Line.  Neighbors say most of the break ins happened along this street running from Meadowlark Lane to Windsor Road.

In some cases, the bandits just rummaged through the inside of the vehicle, but an elderly lady told Fox-4 someone stole her care taker's purse from inside her vehicle.

"It's kind of scary because this is a relatively safe neighborhood," said Wellborn.

For Principe, the incident is a wake up call to keep his car locked.

"It doesn't matter where you live, you should always lock your doors, because I'm sure you know, even in gated communities, guys could just walk through the gate on foot."

Another neighbor says a surveillance camera at his house shows two people breaking into one of the vehicles.  He turned the footage over to the Lee County Sheriff's Office.
