LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- The Scripps-Howard Foundation and Fox 4 were giving children the gift of literacy Tuesday at the Salvation Army of Lee County.
This is part of Fox 4’s Give-a-Child-a-Book campaign. Kids got to pick out their new favorite books, all donated by the employees of Fox 4 and Scripps-Howard.
Kids were leaving with stacks of books, something those who work with families at the Salvation Army were happy to see. “Just to see them smiling and see them get really excited about books and hearing them say 'we've got lots to read now when we go back to our rooms', or some of the homes we're moving into, it's kind of like a heart warmer for us,” says Laura Grainger.
So far this year, Scripps has given 40,000 scholastic books to children across the county as part of the campaign.
