Sheriff calls out repeat offenders on Facebook

LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- A Facebook post by Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott is sparking a conversation about repeat offenders and the cycle of crime in the area.

The post shares new homicide statistics from the last five years. The sheriff says between 2011 and September 30th of this year, there were 98 homicides in Lee County.  79 of them happened within the City of Fort Myers.

More than half of suspects in Lee County cases already had criminal records.  In Fort Myers that number jumps to more than 90%.

Sheriff Scott calls these figures a major concern, but says he doesn't have an answer as to how to fix this.

He says in part "I have been a cop for 27 years and a sheriff for 11. My colleagues and I have put a bunch of folks in jail...but never let anyone out of jail; unless directed to do so by higher authority."
