Sinking pontoon boat limps to shore

Posted

FWC officials towed a pontoon boat to shore Wednesday after it took on water off the coast of Marco Island.

Collier County dispatchers fielded a call from a woman aboard the boat about a half mile from the tip of Cape Romano.  She told them her boat was taking on water.

“It's in the back maybe, about a foot maybe, two foot."

A hole developed in one of the pontoons.  There were 3 kids, 2 adults and 4 dogs aboard the boat.

"We have a little john boat but I don't think we could put everyone in it," the caller told dispatch.

Rescuers with the Marco Island Police and Fire Departments were the first to the scene.  Crews had to navigate through windy conditions and choppy waves.

Investigators aren't sure what caused the accident.  No one was injured.
