Before cop shooting, 911 caller wrongly said man was armed

AVENTURA, Fla. (AP) - The tape of a 911 call shows that a passing driver wrongly told North Miami police that an autistic man was in the street threatening to kill himself with a gun.

In the call released Thursday, the unidentified woman told the 911 operator that the man appeared to be mentally disturbed and that another man was trying to talk him out of killing himself.

In fact, 27-year-old Arnaldo Rios was holding a toy truck and his therapist, 47-year-old Charles Kinsey, was trying to coax him back to the nearby group home where he lived.

A responding officer shot Kinsey in the leg. The police union says the officer was trying to shoot Rios because he thought he was about to shoot Kinsey.

The shooting is under investigation by state officials.
