TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Florida legislators are wrapping up their annual session in a frantic burst of activity in the final hours.
Legislators must act on dozens of bills by midnight Friday, or the legislation will be lost for another year.
Legislative leaders late in the day declared that a proposed gambling bill was dead for the session. Another major bill in jeopardy is a measure designed to battle the state's opioid epidemic. It is a top priority for Gov. Rick Scott.
The annual session lasts 60 days, but legislators are extending the session until Sunday.
That's because Republican leaders didn't wrap up work on a new state budget in time. State law requires the budget to be finished 72 hours before a final vote. Legislators will only consider budget-related bills during the extended period.
