Man arrested for dumping used needles in canal

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. (AP) - A Florida man was arrested this week for allegedly dumping used needles in a canal behind his home.

The Tampa Bay Times reported Saturday (http://bit.ly/1YNpBsA ) that neighbors alerted law enforcement after finding a parakeet seed container filled with needles floating in the canal behind the home of 57-year-old Gary Parsh.

Deputies said that the container was weighted down in an attempt to sink it to the bottom of the canal. Divers with the Pasco County's Sheriff's Office later located several more identical parakeet seed containers during an underwater search of the canal.

The sheriff's office said that parakeet seed containers were found in Parsh's home and that he raised birds.

Parsh was charged Tuesday with littering and illegal dumping. He was released the same day on a $5,000 bond.
