Florida minors are one step closer to being required to get parental consent before having an abortion.

SB 404, Florida's controversial Parental Consent bill, passed the Florida Senate 23-17 Thursday morning. The proposed law requires doctors to get written consent from a minor’s parent or legal guardian before performing an abortion.

The bill now will go to the Florida House for a vote.

The bill includes exemptions for situations such as minors who have health emergencies or who already have children.

"We need to figure out how we turn this around and how we focus on life, because it is undeniable that an abortion ends a life, a life that has a purpose for this world," said State Representative Erin Grall.

The State Supreme Court struck down a law in 1989 that required minors to get their parents’ consent before having an abortion. Now, more than 30 years later, lawmakers approved a version they believe will be upheld.
