TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - A bill to allow guns on state college and university campuses is among four gun bills that sailed through their final committee stops and are ready for full chamber votes.
Two of the other bills approved Thursday would ban backyard gun ranges, and the fourth would strip aggravated assault from the list of gun crimes carrying a mandatory minimum sentence under the state's 10-20-Life law.
The most contentious of the bills would allow licensed students, teachers and visitors to carry guns on state college campuses. The measure is opposed by university presidents, faculty organizations and campus police chiefs.
But gun rights advocates say it would make campuses safer, arguing that gun-free zones at schools leave them more vulnerable to attack.
