WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say a 340-foot tall radio tower at a South Florida water plant crashed to the ground after a tractor hit one of its support cables.
The Palm Beach Post (https://goo.gl/jwXfei ) reports that the 30-year-old tower came down Monday morning. Two trucks parked at the West Palm Beach plant were crushed, but no injuries were reported.
Officials say a worker was taking sludge from one part of the water treatment plant to another when the tractor hit the guy wires. The 30-year-old tower was used to remotely monitor and control sewer lift stations and other water system pumps around the city.
Deputy City Administrator Dorritt Miller says a new, free-standing replacement tower located next to the collapsed tower was undamaged. It took two hours to reprogram computers to reroute the monitoring capabilities through it.
