Stolen toys replaced by Lee County Deputies

FORT MYERS, FLa. -- Fausto Remigio remembers what its like growing up poor and getting donated gifts on Christmas. "I loved playing basketball so when I got an actual basketball, it lit my whole day up."

Inside a green and white building on Palm Beach Blvd, toys and meals are stored every year to give out on Christmas day. But when they walked in Wednesday night, all of the gifts were gone. I was very upset. When I saw some of that missing and taken I was not very happy with that," Remigio said.

Even more of a shock to Reverend Suarez, whose led the association 37 years. "The door wasn't so strong and they opened the door and they took the toys," said Suarez.

With two days before Christmas and no food or boxes of toys, a group of guys who always save things jumped right in. "We unloaded huge boxes of toys, a bunch of different people, not only the Sheriffs office but other partners in the community got together trying to bring some food and presents to bear for the less fortunate," said Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott.

Scott tells me he thinks young kids stole the toys. His staff is already working on pinning them down. "We did process the scene and had some decent evidence that we were able to secure in terms of fingerprints and otherwise. We'd love to throw them in jail and let them face justice for what they did," Scott said.

Justice served on one end and happiness through toys on the other. A feeling Remigio knows all too well. "I know how it felt to get a gift and its even better to give one back to a child."
