NORTH PORT, Fla. -- An early morning stabbing in North Port led to a school lockdown and ended with a suspect in custody Monday.

The Hispanic male suspect is now in custody of the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office.

According to North Port Police, officers were called to the 3600 block of Madagascar Avenue around 5 AM Monday and discovered a female with a stab wound.  The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

A man hunt was begun in the area using K-9 units and a Sarasota County Sheriff's helicopter, which caused the lockdown of nearby Lamarque Elementary as a precaution.

The school has since reopened.
