Tax scams on the rise in Lee County

Posted
FORT MYERS, FLA.- It's the first official day of tax season, and according to the Lee County Sheriff's Office, crooks are already working to steal your refund!

Stacey Payne, with the Lee County Sheriff's Office, told Fox 4 they're already getting calls to the fraud line about this.

"It's the first day and within the first hour we've received 33 phone calls. It's back, it's with a vengeance. they're not going away."

Payne said its a red flag if the IRS is reaching out to you.

"The IRS is not going to call you without notifying you first that they are auditing you or they are looking for you, and the Sheriff's office is not going to arrest you or tell you to give us money in order not to arrest you."

The best thing you can do if you get a weird call like this?
Hang up and report it.
It may sound legit, but Payne said scammers are after one thing, and they'll go to great lengths to get it.

"They're looking to get your money, they want to steal your money and line their pockets with your cash."
