Team takes local coach to 500 wins

SOUTH FORT MYERS, Fla. -  A local high school basketball team celebrated a historic night when their coach won the 500th game of his career.

Together everyone achieves more, that is the message coach Mark Morehead has instilled into his players since he arrived at South Fort Myers High School 2 years ago.

Tuesday night the Wolfpack were out on a mission, to get him to 500 career wins.

“The kids wanted me to get it last night here at home, and they didn't let me down at all,” said Coach Morehead.

His team played their hearts out, down by ten at the half against Cape Coral High School.

Junior Guard, Brandon Lewis, says, "Everybody was getting frustrated and then when we got into the locker room another coach, Coach Bernard came in and told us to play like it was our last game. So everybody took that to heart and then we turned it up a notch in the second half."

Lewis and his teammates played, inspired by their coach and mentor, going on a 21-0 run to seal the 68-58 win over Cape Coral High. A total team effort which wasn't lost upon the 40 year coach.

"I have really been blessed because I've had some very good teams but without having good players, you don't have a good coach”, said Morehead.

Players like Brandon Lewis and Trelin Jean-Francois go a long way to make the coach's life a whole lot easier, even when they have a little fun with their coach.

Jean-Francois says, "when he starts to tell a story, we'll be like 'back in my Navy days' or something like that.” All joking aside, Brandon and Trelin work and practice hard. Understanding they have risen their games on and off the court thanks to his watchful eye.

The Wolfpack are hungry for a chance to get their coach to win number 501 Thursday night when they play Riverdale at 7:30pm.
