SWFL woman's unknown prayer gets answered

If someone were to give you a free car after years of being car-less, you might have a similar reaction to Althea Tyler.

"I was overwhelmed," Tyler said. "I could barely stand up there because it was such a surprise."

Tyler says it isn't your every day, 'A good Samaritan gives you a car' type of story.

"Before I got the car, I had dreams of my mom leading me and telling me, 'Thea go get this car.' It was just visions."

A dream Tyler says comes after years of prayer.

"Many times I prayed out to the Lord, 'Lord could you bless me with a car?' I was just crying out to the Lord," Tyler said. "I really needed a car."

A prayer Greg and Darlene Newcomer, the couple who gave Tyler the car, had no clue about.

"We had no idea of what her prayers were," Darlene Newcomer said. "We certainly had no idea of what her dreams and visions had been leading up to this time."

Darlene and her husband Greg have been driving a red '97 Buick for more than a decade, a gift from Greg's mother before she passed away.

"Selling it was not even an option," Darlene said. "We felt when it came time for us that we would in turn give it as a gift so the legacy of gift giving could continue."

The couple tells FOX 4 they were looking for a new car and wanted to pay it forward with the Buick they've had for so long, not knowing who to give it to.

"My husband brought up the story of Gideon in the Bible," Darlene Newcomer said. "Gideon in testing God, put a fleece out and asked the Lord for the fleece to be presented in a certain way the following morning. This way he would know the word of the Lord was true for what he was about to do. So we put the car out as a fleece for the Lord to show us who he wanted us to gift it to."

"Little did we realize that within an hour," Darlene Newcomer said. "The Lord would answer the prayer so quickly and give us the name of Ms. Althea to give it to."

Just like the Newcomer's got a name, Tyler says she's got one for her new ride.

"They have no idea how this gift touched me," Tyler said. "This car is simply a gift from God. I'm going to name it Althea, JR."
