CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- Police say the driver of a car that slammed into several trees on Cape Coral Parkway Sunday night, critically injuring all three people in the car, was drunk at nearly three times the legal limit.

It happened just before midnight on Cape Coral Parkway between Pelican Boulevard and Santa Barbara Boulevard.

According to Cape Coral Police, a witness says a car sped past them in the westbound lanes going approximately 80 miles per hour, then cut across the lanes and entered the median.

The car side swiped two trees before hitting a third tree head on.  The car broke into three pieces, ejecting two of the three occupants.  All three were trauma alerted to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

They have been identified as 30-year-old Michael Grossman (the driver), 30-year-old Derrick Walker, and 31-year-old Stephen Campanella, all of Cape Coral.

Police say it was later determined that Grossman had a blood-alcohol level of .230, nearly three times the legal limit of .080.

A criminal investigation is under way.
