CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. -- Two Port Charlotte residents were critically injured Sunday night after a motorcycle crash near Englewood.

35-year-old Randy Twombly and 16-year-old Lakin Bontjes were taken to area hospitals after the crash.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, at 10:20 p.m., both victims were riding a motorcycle northbound on Placida Road in the Grove City community, south of Englewood.

As they approached San Casa Drive, Twombly attempted to change lanes and collided with the left rear corner of a northbound SUV.  That sent the motorcycle across the grass median and southbound lanes before hitting a utility pole.

Troopers say neither riders were wearing helmets.

There were no injuries in the SUV.

The crash is still under investigation, and charges are pending.
