Woman dead, child injured in Tamiami Trail crash

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. - A vehicle collision near Everglades City Monday morning left an Immokalee woman dead, a toddler in serious condition, and a driver in jail.

The crash happened on Tamiami Trail at the intersection with State Road 29 just after 8:30 a.m. Monday.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, an SUV with five Immokalee residents was southbound on S.R. 29 and had stopped at the red flashing light before attempting to turn left onto Tamiami Trail.  The SUV's driver, 37-year-old Hector Jimenez, pulled out into the path of a westbound truck occupied by a Cudjoe Key couple in their 70's.

A passenger in the SUV, 35-year-old Inocenta Sales, was taken to Physician Regional Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

A 1-year-old boy in the SUV, Mike Sales, was taken to Lee Memorial in serious condition.

Jimenez was arrested and charged with not having a valid driver's license causing death.  He was taken to Collier County Jail.

According to the FHP report, the injured child was not properly restrained in the vehicle.
