TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla. — A unique Tampa Bay area league for kids with special needs is set to open a state-of-the-art field in Temple Terrace.

Buddy Baseball is open to all kids with disabilities. Players can register online.

The one-of-a-kind new field is located behind Lewis Elementary School. The grand opening is Monday, January 6.

The new field is wheelchair-accessibile with a soft forgiving synthetic surface. The bases are painted on to help those with mobility challenges.

Players are accompanied on the field by volunteer “buddies,” who help them hit, catch and run. Volunteers can also register on the website.

The new field was funded through a partnership with Temple Terrace, Hillsborough County and the State of Florida.

“This really is a field of dreams,” says Buddy Baseball executive director Russ Oberbroeckling.
