The year summer never came

Posted

We're less than a week from the official start of summer, but nearly the entire country has already had a taste of the hot weather associated with the season in the middle of the year.

Most of the Plains, the Midwest and the Northeast all experienced some unseasonably hot summer temperatures as early as March.

The Northwest felt the summer heat a month later.

And the Southwest is expecting their second heat wave this year with temperatures expected to top out well into the triple digits.

But what if those hot summer temperatures never showed up?

What if the United States was still getting frost in July? Or August?

All of that happened 200 years ago.

It's been called 'the summer without summer,' '1800 and froze to death' and 'Poverty Year.'

This cooler than normal season most harshly affected Europe, but it also had adverse effects on a very young United States, too.
