COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. - The Collier County Sheriff's Office is reporting the following road closures due to heavy smoke.

  • Eastbound Sabal Palm Road at Brandy Lane
  • Everglades Boulevard South to 52nd Avenue Southeast

The Florida Department of Health in Collier County said the smoke is an irritant that can cause a scratchy throat, coughing, headaches or irritated eyes and nose. It can also affect chronic heart or lung conditions like asthma.

They offer the following tips to stay safe:

  • Avoid prolonged outdoor activity
  • Pay attention to visibility and how you feel
  • Run your air conditioner if you have one
  • Close your windows
  • Avoid using anything that burns when smoke is high, such as candles or wood fireplaces
  • Do not vacuum - this stirs up settled dust
  • Do not smoke
