Evacuations ordered in low-lying areas of DeSoto County

DeSOTO COUNTY, Fla. -- Emergency management officials in DeSoto County have ordered a mandatory evacuation of low-lying flood prone areas.

A Flood Warning is in effect for the Myakka River at Myakka River State Park; the Peace River at Bartow, Zolfo Springs, and Arcadia; and Horse Creek near Arcadia.

Significant river flooding will continue over the next several days as heavy rainfall from Hurricane Irma drains into West Central Florida rivers.

Do not drive cars through flooded areas.

Report flooding issues to the Emergency Operations Center at 863-993-4831 (8AM-8PM).

ROAD CLOSURES IN DeSOTO COUNTY (10AM TUESDAY)

Road Closures:

  • Citrus Street (in Orange Heights)
  • Masters by Voss Oaks
  • Hansel North- Completely un-passable
  • Hull Road
  • Reynolds
  • Kings Highway at the Horse Creek Bridge – Due to other closures, the only detour for this is Airport Rd to CR 760A to US 17 to CR 761 back to Kings Highway if heading South to Port Charlotte. Reverse these directions heading North to Arcadia.

US-17 Northbound; Flooding on U.S. 17 north at Fish Branch Rd, near Wauchula, all lanes blocked.

SR-70 Westbound; Flooding in Manatee on S.R. 70 west at Wauchula Rd, near Myakka City, all lanes blocked.

SR-70 Westbound; Flooding in DeSoto on S.R. 70 west at Desoto Ave, all lanes blocked.

US-17 Northbound; Flooding in DeSoto on U.S. 17 north at SW Fletcher St, all lanes blocked.

SR-70 Eastbound; Emergency vehicles in DeSoto on S.R. 70 east before County Line Rd, all lanes blocked.

SR-31 Southbound; Flooding in Charlotte on SR-31 south beyond Bermont Rd, all lanes blocked.
