State CFO warns to check a contractor before you hire

FORT MYERS-- Four in your corner is dedicated to protecting you and your money when it comes to storm damage.

We spoke with Jimmy Patronis, Florida's Chief Financial Officer, as he toured the damage in Fort Myers.

He says homeowners are most vulnerable to scams after a natural disaster like Irma.

He says sometimes it can be hard to tell the difference between legitimate and unlicensed contractors.

So you should always ask to see their business license and never pay for promised repairs up front.

You can also check myflorida.com to see if the contractor is licensed.

The state has launched a special hotline dedicated to answering your questions when it comes to insurance and other recovery issues.

The number to call is 1-877-693-5236.
