Supplies running dry as Southwest Florida prepares for Irma impact

Shopping for hurricane supplies is getting tough, as shelves across Southwest Florida braces for a possible hit by Irma.

Irma's path isn't clear yet, however, some models show a major impact to Southwest Florida and residents aren't taking any chances on the heels of the devastation left behind in Texas from Hurricane Harvey.

Several large retailers ran out of water by Tuesday afternoon, while some gas stations in Cape Coral were forced to temporarily close off their pumps after selling out of fuel.

Small businesses like the Family Hardware store are one of the few places you can still find supplies.

"Do you want to get on the list sir," said Ronnie Maguire, Assistant Manager of The Family Hardware Store.

However, they are also struggling to keep up with demand.

"We're out of everything but we do have a truck on the road expected here tonight," said Ronnie Maguire.

Batteries and water were the first things to sell out at the store.

"They keep calling and I said 'it's not a problem; we'll let you know when it comes in.' We've got orders for generators; we've got a truck load of generators."

A Shell gas station along Skyline Blvd in Cape Coral ran out of gas around 5 p.m. Tuesday.

"After going through Charlie,  anybody that's never lived down here, yeah,  this is something to be serious about," said Giselle Plotts.
